Whitney began reading as a young girl. She always loved listening to her mom read to her before. Eventually she began reading on her own and spent many late nights with her flashlight and book. People read for many different reasons. Some read to learn more about our world's history and different cultures, some read to pass a class, others because they simply love getting lost in a different world. For Whitney, her reason for reading was not only to learn but also because she enjoyed reading and how it gave you the power to travel to any time or place and experience feelings as if you were there. In order to be a good reader, one must be an active reader; making predictions as they go, analyzing character's emotions and situations, using their background knowledge, and paying attention to the structure and purpose of the text. Reading has always come easy for Whitney because she becomes completely immersed. Often when reading, she zones out to the rest of the world, unaware of her surroundingS. The hardest part about reading for Whitney has been making it a priority and carving out time in her day to do it. She tends to lean towards adventure books that allow her to experience something completely new and exciting. She used to be known as a bookworm but in recent years has not made reading a regular occurrence, which she is working on changing. Overall, Whitney loves reading and wishes she read more.
Whitney learned to write a short time after she began reading. She fell in love with writing and by the 2nd grade, she had decided she was going to be an author when she grew up. Although Whitney still loves reading, her passion for writing died out after her first year of middle school. People write to express their feelings, for fun, or because they have to for a school or job assignment. For Whitney, she now mainly writes for school but will occasionally journal about her day. She writes because it helps bring together her scatterbrained thoughts and make sense of situations and/or stop stressing out. In order to be a good writer, the reader must be kept in mind and any questions they may have, they must tell a full story, and they must be willing to revise their work. Whitney enjoys journaling just about her day and the good things that happened so she can look back and remember those moments. She also enjoys writing to solve or to analyze a problem in her life. Her ideas come from her daily life and the joys or struggles she faces. When Whitney is writing for an audience, responses that help her the most are honest. She wants complete honesty when she asks for a response to her work, it helps her become a better writer. In general, Whitney enjoys writing when she has no audience but does not always like sharing her writing with others.
